What are some good homemade compost bins?
1) Wooden bins
A very cost effective option, but
can also be the shortest lived option. Cedar is a good
choice for building a compost bin, it will last much
longer. Avoid pressure treated lumber as it can leach
into the compost pile. One advantage of wooden bins is
that it is easy to build a multi bin pile, so that you
can process significantly more material, especially if
you don't care to turn it very often. By building a
compost bin with removable slats you can optimize it to
ease the loading process, yet it is contained so that it
can hold more material and do a better job of retaining
moisture.
2) Wooden pallets
A common variety of the wooden
bin is one built out of wooden pallets. This minimizes
the actual carpentry involved, and makes it easier to
take apart and store if desired.
3) Cinder block
Very durable, can be built with
mortar to create a permanent compost bin, or just using
stacked blocks will allow partial disassembly for loading
and unloading materials. Can be built as 3 sided bin to
once again ease the loading and unloading, or a 4 sided
bin that improves retention of moisture and material.
