Composting is a great way to conserve our natural resources. But you if you don't want an unsightly pile next to your garden, or you need a bin to keep the criiters out, here's a great choice for a simple compost bin.
Features of the Soilsaver Compost Bin:
This is is a fully enclosed composter, including a locking lid. It's well aerated, helping to avoid problems with the pile smelling, and you can use the holes in the lid for adding water to keep the pile moist and active. The base will help keep vermin out of the pile.
It's lightweight (about 30 pounds), as it's made from Polyethylene with 50 percent recycled HDPE plastic content, and comes with a 25 year manufacturers warranty.
It will hold enough material that you can get a hot compost pile going in it. The 2 foot square top opening allows easy loading of plenty of material. (dimensions are about 28" by 28" by 32" tall)
The hardware is made from nylon, so it won't rust
Things to watch for: The directions indicate that it should be placed on a level flat surface. This fairly important, as the major complaint seen with this composter is that the lid sometimes doesn't fit properly, and it almost always seems to be the case that the base is not square on the ground.
This is a relatively inexpensive composter. In some sense, you get what you pay for in that it's a simple plastic unit, it has doors but they aren't really big enough to load and unload the unit. Some folks suggest that turning the pile with this bin is best accomplished by simply pulling it up from the pile and moving it, and then reloading the composting material into the new location.
Some folks are unhappy with the speed of the composting process, but the reality is that no composter will work fast if you don't make a habit of turning the pile periodically, which is why compost tumblers like the Urban compost tumbler are able to sell for more money. Keep the need to turn occasionally turn the pile in mind when you pick a location to set it up.
Take a look at the comments for the Soilsaver compost bin on Amazon. Except for the lid fitting problem, it seems to get pretty positive reviews. Either people like it a lot, or don't like it because of the lid fitting problem, which is usually solved by putting it on level ground. For the price it's a great first choice, and many people seem to come back and buy more than one after the first one.
